Satoshi Tomiie

Satoshi Tomiie is one the most successful Japanese electronic music producers and DJs. He has written music for soundtracks, including well known Animatrix. Satoshi Tomiie was lucky to have a classical music education and later became involved with various bands throughout high school. An interest in hip hop music and DJ’ing came later and after some appearances was eventually asked by a Japanese cosmetics company to collaborate by creating a track for a Frankie Knuckles show. The veteran recognized Tomiie’s potential, and the collaboration result was “Tears” that became a techno classic.
Given the opportunity, the rising star DJ moved to New York. He joined the Def Mix crew and became recognized as one of the world’s top DJs. Satoshi Tomiie often tours the biggest dance music festivals and established international clubs. In 2000 he created his first CD titled “Full Lick”. It was a great success worldwide and especially in England. Tomiie has a series of remixes and music productions, and has released several DJ mix compilation albums. Satoshi Tomiie is the owner of house music record label SAW.

John O’Callaghan
John O’Callaghan Biography
Voted #60 in the 2008 DJ Mag Top 100 Poll
Overview: It’s taken John O’Callaghan just 5 short years to outrun his ‘next big thing’ tag and move over to the A-list fast-track. A masterful spinner, his unique blend of trance, coupled with an exacting, pin-point precise mixing style has seen him power up the DJ rankings. In the summer of 2008 the gifted 27 year old spun his first Radio 1 Essential Mix and, in the course of the year, was one of only 4 trance DJs to do so. In the 2007 Top 100 chart, John was marked out as the man to watch by no less than 5 DJs. 12 months later he duly delivered on their predictions, entering at No.60 on the 2008 countdown. Last year he picked up the ‘Best Producer’ and ‘Best DJ’ trophies at the Irish Dance Music Awards; decisively conquered the notoriously-competitive dance-testing ground of Ibiza and became the first Irishman to play Trance Energy. In 2009 he stands at the threshold of dance superstardom.
Production: Since making his first moves into music production just 5 years ago, John’s notched-up over 20 releases on some of the most respected labels in the industry, prompting Paul Van Dyk to mark him “one of the most exciting producers in the world today”. Club killers like ‘The Chamber’, ‘Exactly’ & ‘Space & Time’ have all become mainstays of DJs sets on many revered trance imprints. In 2007 he released both his first compilation ‘Live As Vol.2’ and his debut artist album ‘Something to Live For’ through Discover Records. Later the same year, in collaboration with vocalist Audrey Gallagher, John produced ‘Big Sky’… By virtue of a 4-month-long club & radio hammering from the big 5, it was voted the No.1 trance tune of 2007 on Armin’s A State of Trance. ‘Big Sky’ has rapidly gained modern trance classic status, virtually taking on a life of its own. John also produces through a number of pseudonyms, including Joint Operations Centre and J.O.C. Under the latter he indulges his love of techno-fringed productions, releasing ‘Rotterdam’ on Sander van Doorn’s own ‘Doorn Records’. In 2008 John was called upon by Godskitchen to mix their Australian 10th Anniversary Compilation, closely followed by ‘Trance World Vol. 4’ which was released through industry giants Armada. John occasionally also collaborates with other select artists, most recently and significantly with trance-legend Giuseppe Ottaviani on the hugely-received VANDIT release ‘Our Dimension’. The spring of 2009 will see the release of John’s highly anticipated 2nd artist album on Armada Records.
DJ: John caught his first DJing break playing on national Irish radio station 2FM’s ‘Sessions Tour’, which was broadcast on New Years Eve, 2003. He has gone on to throw trance-fire onto the floors of some of the world’s highest-profile clubs and festivals. Counted amongst them are Ireland’s Planet Love, Global Gathering, Trance Energy, WMC Miami, South America Music Conference and Creamfields, amongst others. 2008 went down as John’s all-important DJ breakthrough year… One that saw him play 6 nights on the White Isle, including Judgement Sunday & Armada at Amnesia, before going on in October to conquer Australia as part of Godskitchen’s infamous yearly nationwide tour. Latterly, O’Callaghan has expanded his fan-bases in Poland, The States, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Slovakia and The Czech Republic – territories which he credits as being the deciding factor in entering the 2008 DJ Top 100 chart. In Utrecht in March of 2009 John will play the main-stage at Trance Energy – now widely regarded as the pinnacle apex of the trance calendar, a colossal accomplishment for the Irish virtuoso.
The Subculture Radio Show: For the last two years John has presented his take on the trance scene, via his Subculture show on widely popular station, DI.FM. Subculture presents a crystal-clear monthly snapshot of John’s in and out of club sound, exploring the outer reaches of electronic music. The show goes out at 5pm UK time on the 2nd Monday of the month, noon US EST and 6pm CET.
Remixes: Although his studio career carries more of an original production bias, John has lent his musical skill to many exceptional remixes. In 2005 his debut came in the form of the hugely-received rewiring of fellow countrymen Agnelli & Nelson’s ‘Shiver’. From there he went on to rework Dogzilla’s ‘Without You’, Ronski Speed’s ‘The Space We Are’ & Filo & Peri’s ‘Anthem’, amongst others. So taken was Armin by John’s 2008 remix of ‘If You Should Go’ that he took the rare step of asking O’Callaghan to rework a second track from his ‘Imagine’ album. John’s remix of The Doppler Effect’s ‘Beauty Hides in the Deep’ last year became a cult hit within the trance fraternity and is regularly sited as his greatest remix to date. He is widely regarded as one of the most in-demand producers & remixers in electronic dance music today.

Tune of the week #2 (07/04/2009)
John O’Callaghan feat. Sarah Howells – Find Yourself (Cosmic Gate Remix) [Armada]
Lyrics
Lyric of the song “Find Yourself” of John O’Callaghan feat. Sarah Howells
Drawn into the backdrop here
you could fade, you could fade away
bright lights on a starless night
then a hole in the dying day
Looking at life through a loaded gun
take your best shot, aim it at the sun
looking at life through a loaded gun
you know you’ll find…
you’ll find yourself, you’ll find yourself alone
you’ll find yourself, you’ll find yourself alone
you’ll find yourself, you’ll find yourself alone
you’ll find yourself, you’ll find yourself…

Reverse - Distant Destiny (Deep Voices Remix)
Dj Shah aka Roger Shah
He is currently ranked on a #58 spot as a this year’s new entry in the profilic dj mag and the official holder of the asot trance tune of the year with his sunlounger - lost tune and has two other tunes in the top 20, too (#11 going wrong, #14 back to you).
He’s described by the mighty Tiësto as “A great producer”. He did a collaboration with the World’s No.1 DJ, Armin van Buuren which has been a top 5 hit record. Averaging 12 productions a year (regularly caned by Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten and Above & Beyond et all), he made 3 successfull albums in 2008 (dj shah - songbook, sunlounger - sunny tales, magic island - music for balearic people) he’s one of Europe’s most prolific and highly-regarded trance producers. He is Roger Shah…
His remix credit-roll reads like a veritable ‘who’s who’ of EDM. Shah has reworked tracks for legendary vocalists like Sarah McLachlan and Nadia Ali. He’s also remixed tunes for a litany of trance-masters including (take a deep breath!) Tiësto, Armin Van Buuren, Mark Norman, York, Cosmic Gate, Josh Gabriel, Johan Gielen, System F, The Thrillseekers, Solarstone, Three Drives, Matt Darey & Oceanlab.
Though probably known first as a producer, the ‘DJ’ in Shah’s name is far from just a natty tag. Roger has taken his innovative, Balearically-edged sets and live performances as far a field as the USA, China, Greece, Spain, Thailand, France, the UK, Hungary, Turkey, El Salvador, The Netherlands, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Malta, Finland, Mexico, Argentina, Ukraine, Romania, Canada & others.
Adding further to the ever-mushrooming Shah empire, Roger also runs his own company “Magic Island”, which is home of his Magic Island Records inprint which is marketed & distributed by Armada and also the Magic Island - Music for balearic people radio show which will be broadcasted every friday 10 pm cet at www.di.fm
Updated Bio as written for the artists of the week story of the Armada site:
Roger P. Shah, Sunlounger, Black Pearl, High Noon at Salinas, Global Experience, Savannah and of course DJ Shah. No matter under which guise he releases it, every single track is a sunny, Balearic beauty with a warm touch to it. German producer Roger P. Shah has been heating up the scene with his production for many years already. No matter how cold the winter might be, there’s plenty of heath descending from the magical tones and beats of his sound.
Starting the fire
Roger’s recognition as a producer started spreading like a fire in 1999, when his first few tracks, ‘The Mission’ and ‘Tides of Time’ were introduced to a large amount of party lovers. But that was only just the beginning. His first hit came in 2003, when ‘High’ was released by UK’s Virgin Records Nebula imprint. Ever since, Roger Shah’s unstoppable inspiration and drive to produce music has been paying off big time. Reading Roger’s discography is harder than it seems, since it’s a maze of guises and collaborations. His tracks are spread out over 15 guises , 19 name variations and 21 collaborations, so it’s clear that Roger has been placing bets on more than just one horse. Roger explains: “When I started my career as a full time producer, it wasn’t possible for me to generate the income I needed, I couldn’t live from just one project. So I did a lot of different things with different labels and countries. This has been a great way to find out how each company works and what they do for me as a producer and artist. So that’s how I found out, that for me Armada is the best company to work with. Another reason for the aliases is that I do different stuff with different people, who are involved with several projects. For example; I have my well known ‘Black Pearl’ project with former star producer Ralph Fritsch, who is one of the best musicians I’ve ever met. He had his own big hit records and projects when I was just a beginner, so I’m really happy to do some stuff with him and that I could sign him to my Magic Island label for his solo comeback.”
Luckily, nowadays his work is limited to only a couple of guises. But there’s surely no limit to the diversity in his productions. From warm vocals to deep trancy beats and rolling basses, Shah’s been there. And the beauty of it is, that it does all have that characteristic Shah sound so many love. His Balearic sound has found the way to many headphones and speakers, all over the world. Roger: “I think it’s touching the people, due to the beauty of the voices and melodies. It’s music to dance to in the club or at the beach, but also to listen to at home during daily life.“ One thing’s for sure: it’s been heating up the crowds for many years already.
Keep the fire going
All of a sudden, in early 2006, there was this huge summer guitar riff stuck in the head of listeners to Armin van Buuren’s radioshow ‘A State of Trance’. It was that one contagious, delicious melody, that kept bugging the minds of so many EDM lovers. It was ‘White Sand’, Shah’s ultimate summer hit produced under his Sunlounger guise. The song was played in Armin’s set and radio shows for weeks in a row, eventually leading to a release on the prestigious Armind label and being the opener of Armin’s ‘A State of Trance 2006’ compilation. The support Shah received was overwhelming, as it catapulted him straight into the circle of big boys in music industry. Even though ‘White Sand’ echoed on for months and months, Shah wasn’t the type to stand still for long or wonder what to do next. He kept on making one monster track after another, and seemed to have found the formula to success with his productions, providing everyone an everlasting summer. The Ibiza feeling was no longer limited to a couple of weeks of partying and relaxing in July, August and September, but also available in the form of an mp3. Some heavyweight productions like ‘Aguas Blancas’, ‘In & Out’ and ‘Beautiful’ kept his status high and his production muscles flexed for even better tracks to come. He released two Sunlounger albums, of which ‘Another Day On The Terrace’ went number 1 on Dutch iTunes’ ‘all-music-genres’ chart, and his long-awaited ‘Songbook’ album, with amazing vocal tracks and Balearic beauties. It seemed as if Roger has been working day and night to finish these high quality albums, or was it possible he used some of his old stuff? Roger:“No, this was no old stuff. The quality of my old tunes from some years ago haven’t got the quality of the tunes I do right now. Or let’s say, since 2005 when I made my first international deals. I’m always writing music and composing melodies, so I always have my own back catalog of layouts and composed stuff. When I work on a new album, I always do a mixture of composing new stuff to express my current inspirations, but also look through my already composed layouts to see if there’s something that fits my current project.”
Inflammable chemistry
Roger had been working with some very talented vocalists before, like Jan Johnston, but he found some pure chemistry in the form of Adrina Thorpe. This American singer caused major damage with her lush vocals on ‘Who Will Find Me’, as it was voted number one track of 2007 by the listeners of the ‘A State of Trance’ radioshow ánd favourited by Armin van Buuren himself. If there was any track of which the crowd knew the lyrics, it was ‘Who Will Find Me’. Simultaneous chanting filled the air as soon as the acoustic guitar of the track was heard. Adrina, from then on, was locked into the hearts of many trance lovers. But Roger himself is a huge fan as well. Roger: “Adrina is amazing. To be honest, I think she deserves to be a superstar like Dido or Sarah McLachlan. I’m so happy that I found her and that she is up to work with me. I have some big plans with her for the future. Next year, I’ll start working with her on a full Roger Shah & Adrina Thorpe Album, which will be released in early 2010. I know it’s a long time to go, but it will be worth to wait. This will be a real beauty.“ More beauty came in the form of ‘Back to You’, which has just been released on the Magic Island imprint of Armada. Although it seems that Roger was quite busy enough already, he also settled himself with a surprisingly masculine collaboration. No one less than Armin van Buuren and UK’s singer Chris Jones found their way to Shah’s studio and blended their talent into smashing cooperation ‘Going Wrong’. As the first official single of Armin’s ‘Imagine’ album, it managed to enter the Dutch charts with a number 5 position. And it turns out that Roger has some exciting plans with Chris Jones too. Roger:” I made the decision that next to my annual Sunlounger album series and another Magic Island album, I wanted to do an album with Chris Jones first, because marketing wise it makes sense to come up with new stuff with this great singer. We had a big hit with ‘Going Wrong’ and everywhere I play people are singing along to it. That’s why we’re now working on an album and we’ll do a big tour next year. We just finished the first songs and some of them are stronger than ‘Going Wrong’, in my opinion, especially emotional wise. The album will be similar to my Songbook album with 2 CD’s with club mixes in my style and acoustic & more crossover versions in Chris’s original style. I will also do some special instrumental dub versions as special download version for the DJ’s. That’s our plan, which means a lot of work!”. We can’t wait to hear it.
An outburst of flames
Roger Shah’s inspiration seems endless. After ‘Going Wrong’, Roger’s back with ‘Lost’ and ‘Back to You’. Roger: “I think that ‘White Sand’ in 2006 and ‘Who Will Find Me’ in 2007 have been really important for my breakthrough and to get the international attention, but let’s not forget my 3 big tracks from this year: the collaboration with Armin for ‘Going Wrong’, which ended in a top 5 crossover hit, but ‘Lost’ and ‘Back to you’ as well. Everywhere I go, I have to play these tracks, otherwise the crowd will kill me.” That’s how far the popularity of Roger Shah goes. Even though his impeccable relaxing sound, or easy-going attitude might tell you he’s just back from another holiday, it’s clear that the little sun hours he gets don’t come anything near the time he spends in the studio. But let’s not forget about the gigs! Roger: “When I work on a track, I always try to create a special atmosphere in it. In the past I got my inspiration from my magic island Ibiza, where I spent some time every year, but nowadays I travel so much and play at so many nice places and beach parties, that this inspires me to create the sound and feeling in my songs.”
On fire: Magic Island
Only a few months ago, Roger felt it was time to team up with Armada Music to take care of the already respected Magic Island imprint. Roger: “To do this team up was a natural way after the great collaboration and interaction I had with Armada over the past years. We already started with some of my own stuff and I think it’s doing great. We had a number 1 at Beatport with the next Sunlounger single, ‘Sunlounger feat. Zara – Lost’, and my current single with Adrina entered on a number 2 spot, so I think it’s a great start for the label.” And be aware, cause this label has got some pretty exciting things coming up! Roger: “The next big thing coming up is my Magic Island album for which I signed a lot of great new and 100% exclusive tracks and for which I made some new exclusive tracks under my different aliases . But the album also features some great collaborations with mates from the scene. We will release this album first and then schedule all tracks from the CD as single releases. So we have a busy schedule and a lot of amazing tunes to come, to push the Magic Island label fast forward. I have 30 tracks on the Mix album, that means about the same amount of releases to come over the next months. During this time, I’ll look out for the next pearls for the second Magic Island album.” With the release of his ‘Magic Island - Music For Balearic People’ album and his next team-up with Adrina Thorpe, ‘Back To You’, coming up, it’s clear that Roger Shah isn’t even near the end of his inspiration. His Balearic sound will light souls for a long time to go.

Gareth Emery
Whether it was his critically acclaimed debut on the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, or his rise to number 23 in the definitive DJ Mag Top 100 Poll, there wasn’t much that didn’t go right for Gareth Emery in 2008, a year that saw him become increasingly established as one of the most innovative, unique, and exciting figures in modern dance music. With his numerous world-class productions topping charts everywhere, and his explosive DJ sets continuing to pack out clubs across the globe, you could be forgiven for thinking he’s a long-established dance music old hand. Well he’s not: he’s 28, and as it happens, he’s only just getting started. Writing and playing music is fundamental to Gareth Emery. His first gigs were at the age of 4, when despite never having lessons, he turned out to be so handy on the piano that his teachers insisted on him taking over the duties in school assembly. At 15, he found himself neglecting classical music training to sneak out to play guitar in a local indie band so ahead of their years that they found themselves headlining Southampton’s music pubs despite all being underage. And at 22, whilst on holiday in France, fiddling with a £500 laptop and wondering what he was going to do with his recent politics degree, he wrote his first electronic classic: the seminal ‘Mistral’. Plenty more were to come.
Since then, the passing years have been pretty good to this young Brit. His relentless touring schedule now sees him banking around 250,000 air miles every year, unequivocally demolishing dancefloors at the world’s finest clubs and festivals. You’ll find him at global superclubs like Home in Sydney, Zouk in Singapore, The Guverment in Toronto and Amnesia in Ibiza. You’ll find him at festivals like Holland’s legendary 30,000 strong Trance Energy and Belgium’s Tomorrowland. And you’ll also find him at the likes of Godskitchen and The Ministry of Sound in his native UK. In short, his unique, distinctive style is one that’s got people talking, with events in over 25 countries a year a testament to his exploding worldwide popularity.
Today, in the Emery studio, it’s all about innovation, setting benchmarks, and challenging perceptions. Constantly escaping categorisation, his productions, (which are composed, produced, and engineered entirely by him), span the worlds of trance, progressive, electro, techno, and a few other places. Languid, spacey grooves, juddering basslines, killer melodies, and hooks that take your breath away mean that it’s a given that Armin, Tiesto, Oakenfold, and Judge Jules have all been fully paid-up members of the Emery fan club for years, while both Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk have tipped him as a future star.
Constantly ahead of the game, Gareth was one of the first DJs to embrace podcasting when he launched The Gareth Emery Podcast in early 2006. The antithesis of long drawn-out DJ mixes, the show soon became the essential download for switched on, savvy dance music fans, with each short but sweet episode providing a mouth-watering expose of the fortnight’s best music. Its success hasn’t gone unnoticed by the industry either, being nominated for ‘Best Podcast’ at the Miami IMDA awards every year since the category was introduced.
With a list of achievements already far surpassing most DJs ten years his senior, Gareth Emery could easily sit back and be content with his lot, but you get the feeling that won’t be happening. His 2009 plans encompass a staggering amount of new projects, including his debut artist album: a long-awaited opus full of completely new material, and Garuda, his new record label and events brand he’s launching after previously heading the much-missed Five AM imprint.
Listening to him speak about Garuda tells you all you need to know about the Emery ethos: “I don’t care if we release two records a year or ten, as long as each one utterly blows me away”. And as long as the music passes his impossibly high barometer of quality, he isn’t even bothered if it sells, although given his flawless record of producing and signing tracks that top DJ and sales charts everywhere, you rather suspect they will. “It’s about nothing more than hunting down the most incredible, life-changing music out there, and trying to give as many people as possible across this planet a taste of it”. And that’s what it’s all about, right? See you down the front.
